The situation gets more complicated for PARENTS as schools are closed so now we have our children at home craving for more screen time. At Bagby, we decided to take this opportunity to run a HOME EXPERIMENT with the person we love the most: our 14-month old daughter. The outcome is SHOCKING and it reveals the ULTIMATE PROOF about smartphone addiction. The Sleep Epidemic
99% of people still use their phone as an alarm clock, affecting negatively the quality of their sleep
A third of US adults report that they usually get less than the recommended amount of sleep. Not getting enough sleep is linked with many chronic diseases and conditions—such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and depression—that threaten our nation’s health. Getting enough sleep is not a luxury—it is something people need for good health. Sleep disorders can also increase a person’s risk of health problems. It's time for some sleep hygiene.
The Productivity Outbreak
Nearly 3 out of 4 workers (70 percent) admit they feel distracted when they're on the job. The problem is biggest for Millennials and Gen Zers, with 74 percent reporting feeling distracted. ( Udemy's survey, 2018)

The Human Relationships Crisis
We spend more time staring at our phones than making eye contact (Bank Of America, 2016)
The decline of eye contact is a fact, and as we spend more and more of our time staring at screens, there's less time left over to look into people's eyes - including the eyes of the people we care about most.
The growth of multitasking on mobile devices and remote working have normalized the experience of having conversations with little or no eye contact which plays a critical role in the development of emotional connections and building meaningful relationships. Indeed, 2/3 of Americans say that they “somewhat or strongly agree that periodically ‘unplugging’ or taking a ‘digital detox’ is important for their mental health ( The APA’s Stress in America, 2018).
The Big Disconnect Between Parents and Children
38% of children under 2 have already used a mobile device (compared to 10% two years ago) (Commonsensemedia, 2013)

Being connected to everyone all the time makes us less attentive to the people we care about most. Nowhere is the alienating power of smartphones more troubling than in the relationship between parents and children. Put simply, smartphones are making mothers and fathers pay less attention to their kids and it could be causing emotional harm. Lactation consultants in Canada and the United States have begun noticing the prevalence of women texting and scrolling through their phones while they breastfeed, breaking valuable eye contact with their baby. It's time to move from "Smartphones" to "Smart Parenting".
